Orca – Y6

Welcome to the Year 6 class page

YEAR 6 STAFF:  Mrs Wisby & Mr McNaughton

Welcome back to school and the Autumn term in Year 6. We have a very busy term ahead of us!

Our topic this term is ‘Origins’ and we have already spent some time planning our ideas together as a class. We will be learning all sorts of different things this term about how things started! We planned ideas together as a class at the start of the first week and the pupils came up with some great suggestions for some projects this term – they wanted to find out how volcanoes start, how earthquakes happen, where money originated, how certain musical genres began, how rugby started, the origin of words, the origin of the internet, and MUCH MORE!  Our topic web can be viewed here: Y6 AUTUMN TERM 2024 ORIGINS TOPIC WEB

The Year 6 Home Learning menu will be accessible from Friday 13th September on our Google Classroom. Login details for this will be given to the children in class before they come home. All pupils are expected to hand in homework every fortnight. Pupils can choose the order in which they complete the set tasks. Home learning will be celebrated and displayed in class and then returned home for safe-keeping. All tasks must be completed at home either on paper or digitally/photographed and then uploaded to the ‘Mrs Wisby Year 6 Orcas’ Google Classroom.  Click to view the Autumn Term home learning menu here: Autumn Term Home Learning menu

Weekly spellings and tables tests will take place this term every Friday – word lists will be uploaded to the Google Classroom to allow the pupils to practise at home. The first set of words will be uploaded on Friday 13th September.

Please encourage your child to read as often and as widely as possible at home – this is really important and makes a significant impact on your child’s confidence with their learning in class. Pupils can take a book home from school or read a book of their own choice from home each week.

Our class novel this half term is ‘Skellig’ by David Almond. The pupils are more than welcome to bring in a copy of the text if they would like to follow along in class. You may be able to get a copy from the library or a local bookshop! This is not essential, but the pupils can bring in their own copy if they would like to. It is a lovely text, full of rich vocabulary. We are planning to study the etymology of many of the words to help us to find out where some of our words come from!

We will be regularly walking to Killay Library as a class this term. Pupils will be allowed to take out books of their own choice, but will be asked to leave these books in school as opportunities will be made for pupils to read for pleasure in class within our weekly timetable.

Our PE day is Thursday – please can pupils wear sports kit to school on this day (clothing that your child feels comfortable to exercise in).

Information about after school and extra-curricular activities will be sent by the office staff via ParentMail to you (choir, netball, football club, etc).

I will keep you updated with any additional information that you may need, but if you have any questions, please come and speak to me directly.

Kindest regards,

Mrs Wisby
